PANK
GUIDELINES

Are absurd, but necessary. Please read and follow the bouncing ball.

1. We recommend that you read PANK to know PANK. By SUBSCRIBING. By sampling some of our ONLINE CONTENT.

2. If that fails, consider that PANK comes from the end of the road, the edge of things, a north shore, up country, a place of amalgamation, and unplumbed depths, where things are made and unmade, and unimagined futures are born. PANK is a ghost town around the next bend. It is hidden in caves in the withered hills. It is buried under impassable drifts of snow. An ultima Thule, PANK – no soft pink hands here. It bears old scars, fresh scabs, callous, blood, and dirt. It is serene melancholy, spiritual longing, quirk, and anomaly. PANK inhabits its contradictions. Your work should, too.

3. We invite writing and art that vibrates, regardless of genre or form. Excite us and we’ll publish you. We read year-round.

4. Per submission, you may send a 5 poems, or pieces of flash prose, or instances of visual art, or 1 longish piece of prose, 5000 words max. To recap, that’s either 5 shortish pieces or 1 longish one. Get it? Whatever you submit must be original and previously unpublished. Multiple submissions are not OK - please wait for a response before submitting again. Simultaneous submissions, however, are fine with us so long as you withdraw your submission immediately if it is accepted elsewhere.

5. We acquire first North American serial rights and online serial rights for work published in PANK, all rights revert to the author/artist upon publication, and payment is two free contributor copies.

6. Submit electronically by CLICKING HERE. We strongly encourage you to submit electronically by clicking there. Please submit electronically. Did we mention our preference for electronic submissions?

7. If you absolutely must, you may submit by mailing your submission to PANK, Department of Humanities at MTU, 1400 Townsend Dr., Houghton, MI 49931. Include a brief cover letter with an economical bio, and an SASE for response (include an email in the cover letter and you can dispense with the SASE; manuscripts will not be returned).

8. Be patient. Expect longish response times. No news is good news. But please, if you haven’t heard back from us in 6 weeks, feel free to check in with an email to pank@mtu.edu.
